Virtual Events- Survey Results and a Creative Solution

Sep 2, 2020

It’s not very often that a force comes into being that instantly shifts the entirety of society as powerfully and profoundly as the global pandemic that we’ve all been dealing with for the past several months.

Wild Apricot recently released the results of a survey in which more than 1,000 membership-based organizations provided insight into how they had handled the need to take in-person events to virtual formats.

If you missed the release of that survey, you can find it here!

One of the things that I noted in the survey was how difficult it has been for organizations to shift *fundraising* events to a virtual format. Galas, golf outings, and other sponsored in-person events often play a significant role in the annual revenue-generation efforts of a membership-based organization.

That’s why I loved hearing about the virtual golf outing that was being planned by a Central Illinois organization, The Children’s Home Association of Illinois.

I interviewed Children’s Home CEO, Matt George, for Episode 4 of The Joy of Membership Podcast. I had to know how the idea for the No Tee Time Tourney came to fruition and what helps Matt and his organization focus on staying innovative during very challenging times.

You can catch that interview here.

If you’d like to check out the virtual golf tournament fundraiser, Matt provided a discount code, “Joy10” that allows you to sign up for the tournament for only $40. The No Tee Time Tourney is a terrific example of innovative thinking and coming up with creative ways to go virtual in very unexpected ways. I hope you will take the opportunity to check out what Matt and the Children’s Home are doing.

Have you been trying out any creative ideas for virtual events lately? I’d love to hear about them!

Hit reply and let me know.

How MY Team Has Been Helpful This Week:

In the spirit of focusing on helpfulness, I’ve started closing out these weekly emails with a snippet of insight into the kinds of things my team has been doing to be helpful to clients. This is by no means exhaustive, but just a quick peek into the many, many ways we help clients:

  • We’re setting up a system to help an organization set and track movement toward member goals.
  • We helped an association set up practice sessions and prepare for an important upcoming virtual event.
  • We created reports to summarize contributions to an organization’s PAC.
  • We reviewed an organization’s software choice to ensure that specific requirements would be met.
  • We got another organization started on their migration to Wild Apricot.
  • We are managing an organization’s annual photo contest, responding to member inquiries and tracking/organization contest submissions.
